Why We Recommend Tufdek

The Industry's Strongest Vinyl – and It's Not Close

Tufdek is the only vinyl decking manufacturer in North America that both produces and directly distributes its product through a network of authorized dealers. That means quality control from the factory floor to your finished deck, with no middlemen diluting the standard.

As a certified Tufdek dealer, Viewpoint's crews are factory-trained in every aspect of the system: surface preparation, adhesive application, hot-air seam welding, and PVC metal flashing installation. It's why we can confidently back every Tufdek project with our own 10-year labour warranty on top of Tufdek's 15-year product warranty.

Independent quarterly audits by Intertek (Warnock Hersey) verify that every square foot of Tufdek meets the same manufacturing standard. No other vinyl decking company in the industry submits to that level of ongoing third-party scrutiny.

Engineering

The 5-Layer Advantage

Most vinyl decking uses just two layers. Tufdek uses five, delivering the industry's highest puncture, breaking, and bursting strength. Here's what's inside every square foot.

1

Polycarbonate Top Coat

A proprietary clear-coat finish that protects the printed design from UV degradation, scuffing, and staining. This is the key differentiator – no other vinyl manufacturer uses polycarbonate surface protection.

2

Aqueous-Based Ink Layer

Water-based inks create the colour and pattern. Combined with the polycarbonate top coat, these inks resist fading far longer than standard solvent-based vinyl printing.

3

PVC Wear Layer

A 60-mil PVC membrane that forms the waterproof barrier. This is the structural core of the product – engineered for Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles, chinooks, and intense high-altitude UV.

4

Weft Reinforcement

A polyester fabric mesh heat-bonded into the PVC. This is what makes Tufdek dimensionally stable – it won't stretch, shrink, or telegraph substrate imperfections the way unreinforced vinyl does.

5

Fleece Backing

The bottom fleece layer provides cushion underfoot, aids adhesive bond to the plywood substrate, and adds an extra moisture barrier beneath the membrane.

Colour Selection

11 Colours Across Two Series

Tufdek offers Designer (wood-grain plank) and Supreme (stone and aggregate) patterns. Every colour features the same 5-layer construction and polycarbonate top coat. Samples available at your in-home consultation.

Designer Series – Wood-Grain Plank Patterns

Warm, realistic wood tones that complement virtually any home exterior. The plank pattern hides dirt and grime between maintenance washes.

White Ash
Beachwood
Birch Plank
Driftwood
Rustic Plank

Supreme Series – Stone & Aggregate Patterns

Cool, contemporary tones with subtle texture. The lower-ink patterns in this series are especially well-suited for high-traffic areas where scuff visibility is a concern.

Graphite
Slate Grey
Valencia Marble
Desert Sand
Sanibel Marble
Almond
A note on colour selection: Screen colours are approximate. We bring physical samples to every in-home consultation so you can see and feel the actual product against your home's exterior. Tufdek periodically updates their colour lineup – we always carry the current season's full range.

Double-Backed Warranty

When Viewpoint installs Tufdek, you get two written warranties from two different companies. The product manufacturer covers the membrane. We cover the work.

15yr
Product Warranty

Issued by Tuff Industries Inc. Covers waterproofing integrity of the Tufdek membrane against manufacturing defects. Many installations exceed 20 years of service life.

10yr
Labour Warranty

Issued by Viewpoint Decking. Covers workmanship on every aspect of our installation – adhesion, seam welding, flashing details, and stair wraps.

Important warranty note: Tufdek's product warranty is only valid when installed by an authorized dealer following Tuff Industries' installation specifications. This is one of the reasons Tufdek is not sold for DIY installation – and it's why choosing a certified installer matters. Viewpoint is an authorized Tufdek dealer and our crews follow every specification.
The Complete System

More Than a Membrane

Tufdek isn't just vinyl on plywood. It's an integrated waterproofing system where every component is engineered to work together. The membrane is adhered with proprietary Tuff-branded adhesive. Seams are hot-air welded (not glued) to form a continuous, leak-proof surface. And at the deck edge, Tuff-Clad PVC-coated galvanized metal flashing directs water safely away from the structure.

This system-level thinking is what separates Tufdek from other vinyl products that simply sell you a membrane and leave the details up to the installer. With Tufdek, every component from the adhesive to the flashing is purpose-built to work as a single waterproofing system.

Every Viewpoint Tufdek installation uses the full Tuff-Clad metal flashing system, not plastic alternatives. It's a significant part of why our decks last.

Why Edge Flashing Matters More Than You Think

The most common vinyl deck failure isn't a membrane failure. It's an edge failure. And it almost always comes down to one component: the drip edge.

The Problem: Plastic Edge Clips

Most vinyl decking installers (including budget competitors) use cheap plastic edge clips to terminate the vinyl at the deck edge. These clips are notorious for failing, typically within 2-5 years. Calgary's freeze-thaw cycling accelerates this dramatically.

Here's what happens: the plastic clip cracks, warps, or pulls away from the fascia. The vinyl membrane releases from the edge. Water gets behind and underneath the membrane, where it sits on the plywood and rots the substrate from below. By the time you notice soft spots, you're looking at significant plywood replacement on top of a full re-vinyl.

Tuff Industries built an entire page on their website documenting these failures because they saw the same pattern across thousands of installations industry-wide. The plastic clip was never designed to last the 15-20 year lifespan of a quality vinyl membrane.

The Solution: Tuff-Clad PVC Metal Flashing

Tufdek's answer to the edge clip problem is Tuff-Clad: a PVC-coated galvanized metal flashing system that's hot-air welded directly to the vinyl membrane. It was inspired by PVC roofing details, where laminated metal flashings have been used for edge terminations for decades.

Because the Tuff-Clad flashing is metal (not plastic), it holds its shape permanently. Because it's PVC-laminated, it can be heat-welded to the Tufdek membrane, creating a single continuous waterproof surface from the deck surface over the drip edge. No clip. No gap. No failure point.

Tuff-Clad comes in four colours (Sandalwood, Grey, White, and Black) to coordinate with your chosen Tufdek colour. It's exclusive to the Tufdek system and is included as standard on every Viewpoint installation.

What to ask any vinyl installer: "What do you use for the drip edge?" If the answer is plastic clips, understand that you're accepting a known failure point in the waterproofing system. The membrane itself might last 15 years, but a failed edge clip can cause water damage within 3-5. At Viewpoint, every project uses Tuff-Clad metal flashing, and it's one of the biggest reasons our installations hold up the way they do.

Built for Calgary

Engineered for Our Climate

Calgary's climate is one of the hardest on decking in North America. Intense UV at high altitude, extreme freeze-thaw cycling (sometimes within the same day during a chinook), wind-driven rain, ice, and months of snow load.

Tufdek is tested to withstand temperatures from -40°F to 365°F and subjected to rigorous Atlas Weather Testing for UV longevity. The weft reinforcement prevents the expansion and contraction cracking that destroys lesser vinyl products in our climate, and the polycarbonate top coat resists the UV degradation that Calgary's 2,400+ hours of annual sunshine inflicts on unprotected surfaces.

This is exactly why we chose Tufdek as our premium product line. After years of installing various vinyl brands, Tufdek consistently outperforms everything else in Alberta conditions.
