What Is Providence?

Honest Waterproofing Without the Premium Price

Providence is a 60-mil fuzzy-back PVC vinyl membrane manufactured by Tuff Industries – the same company that makes Tufdek. It's sold under Viewpoint's brand name, but the product itself is from Tuff Industries' Econodek line, a well-established waterproof vinyl with nearly three decades of field history across North America.

When Viewpoint installs Providence, you get the same crew, the same surface preparation, the same adhesive application, and the same Tuff-Clad PVC metal drip edge flashing as our Tufdek installations. The difference is in the membrane itself: Providence uses a single-ply construction without the polycarbonate top coat and weft reinforcement that make Tufdek the industry's strongest product.

For many homeowners, that trade-off makes perfect sense – especially on lower decks, covered areas, or projects where budget needs to stretch further.

Who Chooses Providence?

Providence is a smart choice when your priority is solid waterproof protection at the lowest possible cost. Here are the most common scenarios we see.

Budget-Conscious Homeowners

You want proper waterproofing and professional installation, but your budget has a firm ceiling. Providence saves roughly $2 per square foot versus Tufdek – on a 300 sq ft deck, that's $600 back in your pocket.

Pre-Sale or Rental Properties

If you're selling your home or managing a rental property, Providence delivers the waterproof protection and clean appearance you need without over-capitalizing on a surface the next owner may eventually replace.

Covered or Low-UV Decks

Covered decks, lower-level patios, and north-facing surfaces take less UV punishment. In these conditions, the polycarbonate top coat advantage of Tufdek is less critical, making Providence a logical fit.

Colour Selection

6 Earth-Tone Colours

Providence's colour palette features neutral earth tones designed to complement virtually any home exterior. The patterns are engineered to hide dirt and grime between maintenance washes.

A note on colour selection: Screen colours are approximate. We bring physical samples to every in-home consultation. Providence colours may change seasonally – we always carry the current lineup.

What Doesn't Change with Providence

Choosing Providence saves you money on the membrane. It doesn't change anything about how we install it. Every Providence project gets the same Viewpoint treatment.

  • Same crew. Our factory-trained installers handle every Providence job – no subcontractors, no handoffs.
  • Same surface prep. We inspect and repair plywood substrate before any vinyl goes down. Rot doesn't get covered up.
  • Same metal flashing. We use Tuff-Clad PVC-coated galvanized metal drip edge on every installation. Not cheap plastic clips.
  • Same 10-year labour warranty. Our workmanship guarantee is identical regardless of which vinyl you choose.
  • Same transparent quoting. Our instant quote tool gives you a line-item breakdown so you can see exactly where your money goes.

Our Honest Take

When We Recommend Providence – and When We Don't

We're not going to pretend Providence is equivalent to Tufdek. It's not. Tufdek is a better product with superior UV resistance, dimensional stability, and longevity. If your budget allows it, we recommend Tufdek.

But we also know that budget is real. And we'd much rather install a quality Providence membrane with proper preparation, flashing, and workmanship than watch a homeowner go with a cheaper contractor who cuts corners on a Tufdek install. A well-installed Providence deck will outperform a poorly-installed anything.

Where we do push toward Tufdek: high-altitude decks with full southern exposure, second-storey decks above living space, and homes where you plan to stay 15+ years. In those cases, the extra investment genuinely pays for itself.

Want the Best? Consider Tufdek

If budget isn't the primary constraint, Tufdek's 5-layer polycarbonate-coated membrane is the industry's strongest vinyl – with a longer warranty, more colour options, and superior performance in Calgary's harsh UV and freeze-thaw conditions.
