What to Expect: Vinyl Deck Replacement

Your old vinyl is coming off and new Tufdek is going on. Here's exactly what happens during a vinyl deck replacement — from the first phone call through to your final walkthrough.

If you're looking at your deck and thinking "it's time" — you're probably right. After 15 to 20 years, most vinyl deck surfaces in Calgary have done their job and are ready to be replaced. The good news is that a vinyl replacement is one of the least disruptive home improvement projects you can take on. Here's what the process actually looks like when you work with Viewpoint Decking.

Before We Arrive

Every project starts with understanding what you have now and what you're hoping for. That means a conversation — either by phone, email, or through our online quoting tool — followed by a visit to your home if the project requires a detailed look.

STEP 1

Initial Assessment & Quote

We'll look at your existing deck surface, check the condition of the plywood substrate underneath, and measure everything. We'll also check for proper slope (water needs somewhere to go) and identify any areas where moisture may have caused damage. You'll get a clear, written quote with no hidden fees.

STEP 2

Colour Selection

We bring physical Tufdek samples so you can see and feel the material in person — ideally against your home's siding, trim, and railing colours. Tufdek offers two product lines: the Designer series with realistic wood-grain plank patterns, and the Supreme series with stone, marble, and aggregate looks. Every colour features their proprietary polycarbonate top finish for fade resistance and easy cleaning.

Tip: If your deck gets a lot of direct sun, ask about Tufdek's Cool-Step colours — they reflect more heat and can feel noticeably cooler underfoot on hot summer days. Designs like White Ash, Almond, and Valencia Marble offer the greatest cooling benefit.

Day One: Tear-Off & Prep

This is the loudest day. We remove the old vinyl membrane and all the trims and flashings that came with it. Depending on the age and condition of your existing vinyl, this can go quickly or require some extra care — particularly around drip edges, door thresholds, and wall terminations.

STEP 3

Old Membrane Removal

The existing vinyl is peeled off and disposed of responsibly. We work carefully to avoid damaging the plywood underneath, since a smooth, clean substrate is essential for the new Tufdek to adhere properly and perform as intended.

STEP 4

Plywood Inspection & Repair

This is the most important step most homeowners don't think about. With the old vinyl removed, we can finally see the true condition of your deck's plywood. Any soft spots, delamination, water damage, or rot is cut out and replaced with new ¾" select plywood. We also verify that your deck has adequate slope for drainage — a minimum of ¼ inch per foot.

What about plywood costs? Any plywood replacement is itemized separately in your quote. Most replacement projects need at least a few sheets — a small cost that makes a big difference in the longevity of your new surface. We'll never proceed with plywood work without discussing it with you first.

Day Two: Tufdek Installation

With a clean, solid substrate ready to go, the installation of your new Tufdek vinyl membrane begins. This is where the transformation really happens — and where professional training makes all the difference.

STEP 5

Adhesive & Membrane Application

Tufdek vinyl comes in large, pre-cut sheets that are adhered to the plywood using a specially formulated latex adhesive. The sheets are rolled out carefully to eliminate air bubbles and ensure full contact with the substrate. Where multiple panels are needed, they overlap by at least one inch for a continuous seal.

STEP 6

Heat Welding

Every seam and overlap is thermally welded using a hot-air welding tool. This fuses the vinyl panels together at a molecular level, creating a single continuous waterproof surface. This is what makes sheet vinyl fundamentally different from composite or plank-style decking — there are no gaps, no cracks, and no path for water to reach the structure below.

STEP 7

Detailing & Edge Work

The membrane is run up walls behind your cladding, wrapped over drip edges with PVC-laminated flashing, and sealed around door thresholds, posts, drains, and any other penetrations. These details are where most waterproofing failures happen on other products — so we take our time here. Every transition point is heat-welded and sealed.

Final Walkthrough & Warranty

STEP 8

Inspection & Cleanup

Once installation is complete, we inspect the entire surface — checking every seam, every edge detail, and every transition point. We clean up completely (your yard will look better than when we arrived), remove all debris, and walk you through the finished product.

STEP 9

Warranty Handover

You receive your written warranty documentation covering both the Tufdek product warranty (15-year manufacturer waterproofing coverage from Tuff Industries) and Viewpoint Decking's own 10-year labour warranty. We also provide you with maintenance guidelines — which are refreshingly simple.

Timeline & What to Plan For

Most vinyl replacement projects in Calgary take one to three days depending on the size of your deck and the amount of plywood repair needed. A straightforward 200-square-foot balcony with good plywood can often be completed in a single day. A larger wrap-around deck with stair sections might take two to three days.

You don't need to be home while we work — just make sure the deck area is cleared of furniture, planters, and BBQs before we arrive. We'll let you know the night before if weather might affect our schedule.

Best time to book: Spring and early summer are our busiest seasons. If you're planning a replacement, reaching out in late winter or early spring gives you the best selection of scheduling dates — and your deck will be ready in time for the season.

What Does It Cost?

Every deck is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all price. The main factors that affect cost are the total square footage, the amount of plywood repair needed, the complexity of edge details and stair work, and the Tufdek colour you choose.

The most accurate way to get a sense of pricing is through our online instant quoting tool — it takes about two minutes and gives you a detailed estimate based on your specific deck. No obligation, no follow-up calls unless you want them.
