We should be upfront: Viewpoint Decking is a certified Tufdek dealer. We chose Tufdek because we believe it's the best vinyl membrane available for our climate and our customers. That said, we want this comparison to be genuinely useful — so we'll be honest about where economy vinyl products have legitimate advantages and where Tufdek's premium pricing is or isn't justified.
When we refer to "budget vinyl" or "economy vinyl" in this article, we're talking about the entry-level vinyl membranes available through big-box retailers or general-purpose installers — products in the 45-mil range with shorter warranties and fewer colour options. Brands in this category include products like Dek-Master's basic line, Econodek (which is actually Tufdek's own economy brand), and similar entry-level membranes.
What Actually Differs
All sheet vinyl membranes work on the same basic principle: a PVC sheet is adhered to plywood and the seams are sealed to create a waterproof surface. The differences come down to the quality of the PVC formulation, the thickness of the membrane, the type of backing, the top coating technology, and — critically — the warranty structure.

The Warranty Question
Warranty is where the difference is most tangible. Tufdek provides a 15-year manufacturer waterproofing warranty and is the only major vinyl brand that requires its dealers to offer a minimum 5-year workmanship warranty. If a seam fails due to installation error, it's covered. On top of that, Viewpoint Decking adds our own 10-year labour warranty — so you're covered on both the product and the work.
Economy vinyl products typically offer 7 to 10 years of waterproofing coverage, and many don't include any labour coverage at all. If a seam fails, you may be covered for replacement material but not for the cost of a contractor to tear out and re-install the failed section. That's a significant gap, especially considering that installation quality is the single biggest factor in how long a vinyl deck lasts.
Our Honest Assessment
Tufdek costs more upfront — but when you factor in the longer lifespan, better warranty coverage (especially on labour), superior fade resistance, and lower lifetime maintenance, the cost per year of ownership is often comparable to or lower than budget vinyl. The premium is real, but it buys real value.
When Budget Vinyl Makes Sense
We wouldn't be honest if we didn't acknowledge that economy vinyl has legitimate use cases. If you're waterproofing a small utility area, a storage room roof, or a secondary deck that doesn't get much foot traffic, a budget vinyl membrane may be entirely appropriate. It'll still waterproof the surface — it just won't last as long or look as good over time.
Similarly, if you're preparing a home for sale and need a functional new deck surface at the lowest possible cost, an economy membrane can make practical sense. Just be aware that a buyer's home inspector will note the product grade, and a premium Tufdek surface carries more perceived value.
The DIY factor: Some economy vinyl brands (like Econodek, Tufdek's own budget line) are available for self-installation. If you're comfortable with adhesive work and own a heat-welding tool, DIY can save significantly on labour. Just know that DIY installation typically voids or reduces the manufacturer warranty, and seam quality is everything when it comes to waterproofing.
When Tufdek Is Worth the Investment
For most homeowners who are investing in their primary residence and want a deck surface that'll last 15 to 20 years without issues, Tufdek is the product we recommend — and it's what we install exclusively.
The reasons are practical rather than abstract. The 60-mil reinforced membrane handles Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles without becoming brittle. The polycarbonate top finish means the colour you choose today will still look good a decade from now. The mandatory dealer training program means every Tufdek installer knows the product inside and out. And the comprehensive warranty structure means that if something does go wrong — whether it's a product defect or an installation error — you're covered.
If you're planning to stay in your home for the long term, the annual cost of a Tufdek deck works out to be very reasonable. A 20-year lifespan means you're paying a few dollars per square foot per year for a waterproof, attractive, virtually maintenance-free deck surface. That's hard to beat with any material.
The Bottom Line
Both premium and economy vinyl membranes will waterproof your deck. The question is how long, how well, and with what level of protection if something goes wrong. Tufdek costs more because it's a thicker, better-engineered product with a stronger warranty — and in our experience, the difference shows up most clearly at the 10-year mark, when economy products are starting to show their age and Tufdek surfaces still look like they were installed last year.
